Marine Station Wonders and One Degree of Separation
Marine Station Wonders
I've been enjoying my time at the Bonne Bay Aquarium and Research Station.
I've been working on photographing the tiniest of things. My pics are getting better! I'll show some soon.
But today:
One Degree of Separation?
Have you ever seen barnacles? I mean the creatures that live inside the little shells that we often see encrusting rocks along the seashore. Barnacles are related to crabs and lobsters, but unlike crabs and lobsters, they have feather boas.
I made a video of some fancy, feathery barnacles, one unimpressed periwinkle, and a photobombing fish. You can watch it here.
Another neat thing I learned is that scallops have eyes all around their bodies. Here is an article about them. I took this photo, which shows the little eyes:
I was in Rocky Harbour, this afternoon, shooting footage for my video work when a resident approached me. I was looking at his boats and he struck up a conversation. He asked me if I knew of Doris McCarthy. She was a very famous artist, so of course, I said "yes" (apparently, most people say no). He told me that she had done paintings of the two boats I was looking at and that the two of them had become friends. I looked her up when I got back to my room and she did, indeed, spend time in Rocky Harbour. This man spun a lot of dubious tales when we talked, but I think this one might be true. If so, I know someone who knew her. Is that one degree of separation or two?
Here are the boats in question:
That is a great story
