Along Fishermans Road
Just below the cottage where I am staying, Fishermans Road (no apostrophe) hugs the shoreline. I walked along it, today, contemplating the history that it represents and how it is emblematic of a way of life that is disappearing. People still hang out along Fishermans Road. I spoke with a longtime resident who is in his 80's. He was sizing up the weather and inspecting his wharf. He had a lot of stories to tell, all of which underscore the changes that have taken place, here.
Further along the road, people were drying fish on the ends of their wharves. Seagulls showed up in droves just in case an opportunity presented itself for a quick fresh fish theft. This is coastal Newfoundland: life in what was once an outport. It now represents a powerful juxtaposition of modern life and old ways.
Here are some of the photos I took on Fishermans Road. I love the weather-worn buildings and the colourful splashes:
The netting protects the drying fish from the gulls. I was told the gulls regularly pull the netting off! |
