Evening Entertainment
Last evening, I headed outside to explore. There were some people on the pier looking at the water, so I went over to see what was going on.
The water seemed to be very active. I could see a lot of ripples and flashes of silver. When my eyes adjusted, I could see that what I was looking at was scores of little fish. "Sticklebacks", one of the older men, a former fisherman, said. I asked what the flashes were. He told me that you see those flashes when one of the fish at the surface turns over.
The light was low, but I shot a short video. In it, you can see the fish. The voice in the background is the old fisherman talking about how a tuna came into the harbour yesterday, jumped out of the water near where we were standing, and splashed a poor unsuspecting woman who was standing close to the edge. (I was jealous!). You can watch the video here.
But there was more! The real stars of the show were the lobsters! The tide had just turned, which means it had reached its lowest point and now it was starting to come in again. This was the time for the lobsters to appear. They sort of boogie along the bottom of the shallows. We saw several lobsters. In this video, you can see three--all different sizes! You can watch the video here.
The fish looked like smelt. Wonder if they are related. The view is beautiful. Dad loved it.
ReplyDeleteI can ask about the smelt. I'm so glad you are enjoying the blog!
