Back Again!

It is one year later, and I am back in Western Newfoundland! This time, I am not the official artist in residence. Instead, this is a self-funded residency of my own making, back to a place that inspired me and nourished me. Back to the sea, back to this old, old landscape, and back to a group of people who have become good friends. And back to continue to work on the art that I only started to make here last year.

People ask me why residencies are so important to so many artists. Creative work requires opportunities and time to take deep dives into the soul of the imagination, and for artists who work with the so-called natural world, time and space are needed for connection and contemplation. This just doesn't work at home for most of us. Creative work is often interrupted and lacks the necessary flow to do the kind of work that wells up from deep places.

The moment we flew over the Newfoundland coastline, I felt a surge of longing and contentment. This landscape is so unique, I would have recognized it even if I hadn't been told where I was. I am back. Let the adventure begin!

Coming in for a landing at Deer Lake.

My wheels! I had ordered and paid for a subcompact car. They replaced it at no extra charge with this Jeep! Not my usual kind of car, but perfect for this adventure!
