The Northern Park Boundary
Gros Morne National Park is 1,805 sq km (697 sq mi) in size. I have been here for a month and have only seen a small percentage of the park. Yesterday, I went with a friend to the northernmost part of the park: Shallow Bay. Shallow Bay has the longest sandy beach in the park. It was like being home again in some ways. Sanderlings and semipalmated plovers were actively searching for food. The tide was on the high side so the beach was fairly clean. I enjoyed looking at the patterns made by the waves in the sand.
We also visited the site of a shipwreck that occurred during a terrible storm in 1919. Here is a link to the story of this shipwreck. It was remarkable to see the bits and pieces of the ship strewn among the rocks on the shore. I understand that every year, the ship disappears a little bit more into the mists of time. In recent memory, you could still see the huge wooden beams. Now they are all but gone. It's a testament to the power of the forces that act upon the seashore. Here is a song about it!
