I am exactly halfway through my residency, now, and I have finally seen some caribou, moose, and foxes! All of them were spotted on the same stretch of road, between the Visitor Centre and the lighthouse at the
Port Au Choix National Historic Site. Port Au Choix is north of Gros Morne. Its national historic site is dedicated to the history of the Indigenous people who first lived there. Several people suggested that I go to Port Au Choix for the scenery, the shorelines, the history, and the caribou. It did not disappoint on any of those points.
I stayed there for two nights. The first evening, I saw moose and caribou but the caribou were very distant and the moose ran away as soon as I spotted them. The second evening was a different story. The caribou, who are clearly unfazed by people, wandered among the cars and two little foxes were also hanging around the roadside. Everyone was careful, quiet, and respectful around these beautiful, graceful animals. This reverence gave the whole experience a sacred quality. Time stood still as we watched and marvelled.

I couldn't get a good photo of the foxes but this shows their colouring.

Love it. So glad they showed themselves. Are these hunted at all?
ReplyDeleteYes but not in the parks.
DeleteThose foxes look different than the ones we have back here in Ontario.
ReplyDeleteYes, I believe these are called cross foxes.
