Walking on Earth's Mantle
One of the most well-known features of Gros Morne is the Tablelands. The landscape here is different from any other in the world. Here, the earth's mantle is exposed. This is why Gros Morne was given UNESCO Heritage Site status in 1987. The rocks on the Tablelands are full of toxic minerals and the plant life is resilient, to say the least. I could try to explain it all but this article does a better job than I would. It's worth a read.
I have visited the Tablelands twice, now, and have taken approximately one zillion photos. Here are a few you might enjoy:
The most common rock on the Tablelands, Peridotite, is actually a black-green colour but when exposed to oxygen, it turns a rusty colour. |
